Confession: I sat down ready to hate this. The 90s show was my show, and Hollywood remaking things I love into a comedy is usually a fast track to me grumbling at the TV for two hours.

Instead I laughed my ass off.

It's funnier than it has any right to be.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum shouldn't work together. On paper it's a weird pairing, the kind of buddy setup that feels engineered in a boardroom. In practice they've got real chemistry, the kind where you can tell they're feeding each other and having fun doing it. Tatum in particular is doing something I didn't know he had in him.

Ice Cube as the captain is exactly the loud, pissed-off presence the movie needs. Every time he shows up the volume goes up ten notches and it's great. Rob Riggle, Dave Franco, and Brie Larson all pitch in and land their swings too. It's one of those comedies where the bench is deep, and nobody's just standing around waiting for a paycheck.

I watched this with the kids, which, fair warning, is a judgment call depending on how old your kids are and how much you care. Mine survived. Your mileage may vary.

Days later I was still thinking about bits from it, which is more than I can say for most comedies I catch on TV. Comedy usually evaporates the second the credits roll. This one stuck.

Would I recommend it to everyone? No. If you're the type who hates loud, crude, R-rated buddy stuff, you already know to skip it. But if that's your lane, or you're on the fence like I was, get off the fence. It's funnier than it has any right to be.
