Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Saw this one in a theater with friends and walked out genuinely fired up. Robin Hood has been told and retold and retold, but this version landed for me.

The cast is the whole ball game. Top to bottom, everyone shows up. Kevin's doing his Kevin thing, Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman, and the whole ensemble just clicks. The bit where Kevin and Morgan have to figure each other out and end up friends? That's the engine of the movie for me. You buy it, so you buy everything after it.

I came in not expecting much and walked out a believer.

And Alan. My God, Alan. The man was put on this earth to play villains, and this is one of the rooms where he made his money. Every scene he's in, you lean forward a little. He's having a blast, you're having a blast, and the movie is better every single second he's on screen.

I also dug the new spin on the tale. You take a story this old, you've got to find a way to make it yours, and this one found it. The crusades angle, Robin coming home to find his country in ruins, deciding it's on him to fix it. It worked. It gave the whole thing weight without making it a slog.

Now, the accent. Yeah, I've heard the jokes. People have been dunking on Kevin's accent for thirty-some years. Honestly? It didn't bug me much. It's a minor thing. If that's your dealbreaker, I think you're looking for a reason to not like the movie. It's not enough to sink any of this.

Seeing it in a theater absolutely made it better, too. This is one of those movies that benefits from a big screen and a crowd. Some of it stuck with me after the lights came up, which is more than I can say for a lot of stuff I sit through.

Would I watch it again? In a heartbeat. Would I recommend it? To anybody. This is one of those movies that I think pretty much everyone can find something to love in. The cast carries it, the new take earns it, and Alan Rickman steals it. I came in not expecting much and walked out a believer.

Long live the king, or, you know, the guy stealing from him.
