Star Trek

Reboots are tricky. Touch the originals too lightly and you've made a karaoke version; touch them too hard and the fans riot. This one threaded the needle.

I walked in curious and walked out satisfied. The crew works. That's the whole engine of this thing for me. Watching them actually solve problems together, bouncing off each other, figuring it out in real time, that's the Star Trek I wanted to see.

A great villain pulls you along with him.

Chris Pine is the headline. He took Kirk, which is an absolutely loaded role to step into, and made it his own without doing an impression. Quinto as Spock is a blast. Pegg as Scotty? Yes please, give me more of that. Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana slotted right in like they'd been doing it for years. Across the board, this cast didn't try to be the old cast; they just played the characters. That's the move.

The action holds up. The visuals hold up. And the connection back to the original stuff is handled with the right amount of respect without turning into a nostalgia slideshow. They earned the callbacks.

Where it loses me is Nero. His reasons? Fine. I get it. I can buy a villain with a grudge. But the journey from point A to "now I'm doing all this" didn't track for me. It felt like the movie needed him to be in certain places doing certain things, and the path connecting those dots had some missing pieces. A great villain pulls you along with him. Nero just sort of arrived where the plot needed him.

So that's the deal. A really strong cast, a crew that feels like a crew, and a villain who's the weak link in an otherwise solid chain.

Would I watch it again? Yeah. Did it stick with me? Yeah. Would I throw it at everybody I know? No, only the people I think will actually vibe with it. But for me, it worked.
