A whole genre started here. That's not hyperbole, that's just the receipts.

What gets me watching this in 2024 (or whenever the hell I last put it on) is that the tech still holds up. They were doing things in 1977 that movies twenty years later were still trying to figure out, and somehow it doesn't look dated to my eye. Cutting edge that aged like it was in a vault.

The greatest villain of all time, full stop.

But the real magic is the people. Hamill, Ford, and Fisher have this chemistry that you genuinely cannot manufacture. Every scene the three of them share just works. They're bickering, they're bantering, they're in the trenches together, and you buy all of it instantly. That's the kind of cast you build a franchise on, and clearly somebody figured that out.

And then there's Vader. The greatest villain of all time, full stop. He walks into the movie and the whole thing tilts on its axis. You don't need a backstory, you don't need ten minutes of exposition, you just need that breathing and that voice and you're locked in.

Chewbacca rules. R2-D2 and C-3PO rule. Every single one of these characters became iconic, and they did it in ONE movie. One. Most franchises take three or four films to build a roster like this and Lucas just dropped the whole pantheon on us at once.

What didn't work? Honestly, I sat here trying to come up with something and I've got nothing. Not a damn thing.

This is the kind of movie where I get why people built their personalities around it. I'm not one of those people, but after a rewatch, I get it. I really do.
