The Sandlot

1993 · Family · Comedy · Drama

"You're killing me, Smalls." That line has been rattling around in my head for thirty years and I have zero interest in evicting it. Watched this one again with the kids, and yeah, it still works.

What makes The Sandlot go is the kids. That's it. That's the engine. They click in that way movie kids almost never click, where you actually buy that these little dudes would spend every waking minute of summer together hunting down a baseball. The chemistry isn't manufactured; it runs the whole thing. Without it you've got nothing. With it you've got a movie people are still quoting decades later.

It hits the same beats it always did, and the quotes still rip, and the ending still gets me a little.

It's funny. It's sweet. It's got real heart. And then it sneaks up on you and becomes an adventure movie, because at some point this stops being about baseball and starts being about whatever's lurking behind that fence. That tonal mix is harder to pull off than it looks, and this thing makes it look easy.

The surprise appearance from Hercules' owner is the cherry on top. I won't spoil it for the three people who haven't seen it, but when it landed, it landed. Pushed the whole movie up a notch for me.

Watching it with the kids was the right move. They locked in. I locked in. We all locked in. It hits the same beats it always did, and the quotes still rip, and the ending still gets me a little.

Some movies you put on as background noise. The Sandlot demands you sit down and pay attention, even if you've seen it twenty times. I love it. Just like the rest of you.
