A League of Their Own

Wowsers. Pun absolutely intended, and if you've seen this thing you already know why.

This is one of those movies I keep finding reasons to revisit, and every time I do it just lands. Geena Davis is the best damn host in baseball, full stop. She carries this whole thing with a kind of swagger I didn't appreciate the first time around but now I can't unsee.

And Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan? Come on. It's one of those performances that's just stitched into the fabric of the movie. You can't separate the actor from the part. Half my brain is quoting him right now and I'm trying to stay focused on writing this review.

Jon Lovitz shows up and steals every scene he's in. That's not a hot take, that's just a fact. The whole roster of ballplayers works too, and I'll admit, Lori Petty surprised the hell out of me. Going in I wasn't sure, coming out I was sold.

The story's solid, the setup's solid, the games themselves are fun to watch. Nothing about this thing feels like it's spinning its wheels. It just hums along and you go with it.

What pushes it over the top for me is the quotability. That's my personal benchmark for whether a movie has actually wormed its way into my brain or just passed through. This one's lodged in there permanently. Lines from this movie come out of my mouth without warning.

A classic. The kind of rewatch where you sit down planning to have it on in the background and then forty minutes later you're locked in like you've never seen it before. Love this movie.
