Napoleon Dynamite

Three awkward teenagers, one Idaho high school, and somehow it works.

I went in figuring this was going to be a slog. Quiet, weird, dated, the kind of thing people quote at you and you nod along pretending to get it. And look, it IS quiet and weird. But it's also genuinely funny in a way I didn't see coming.

I came in expecting boring. I left grinning.

The whole cast plays it straight-faced, and that's the trick. Nobody is winking at the camera. Nobody is begging you to laugh. They just commit to the bit and let the awkwardness do the work, and then a line lands and you're cackling at your TV by yourself like a crazy person. I was the crazy person. Multiple times.

This is sneaky comedy. It doesn't come at you with a punchline-per-minute pace. It just sort of marinates, and then BAM, something hits and you're replaying it in your head an hour later. A lot of the lines are very of-their-moment too, very 2004, and somehow that makes them funnier instead of dated. Like a time capsule you didn't ask for.

And the quotability. I get it now. I get why people won't shut up about this movie. You watch it once and three or four lines just lodge in your brain rent-free.

Would I throw it on again? Yeah. Did it stick with me after? Also yeah. Would I tell pretty much anyone to give it a shot? I would, honestly.

I came in expecting boring. I left grinning. That's a win in my book, even if the movie itself would never brag about it.
