Poor Things
Overrated. There, I said it.
I went in expecting to love this thing and spent a decent chunk of the runtime thinking about getting up and leaving. I didn't, but the thought was there, and that should tell you something.
Emma Stone is the saving grace.
Emma Stone is the saving grace. She's got this sweet, innocent air about her that carries scenes that would otherwise lose me completely. Watching her grow into adulthood on screen is the engine of the whole movie, and she makes it work as well as anyone could. That part of it I'll give credit for. Willem Dafoe is doing his thing too, and his thing is usually worth showing up for.
Then there's Mark Ruffalo. Look, I love the guy. I'm pulling for him in basically everything he's in. But the overacting here was a lot. A LOT. Dialed up to a place I couldn't quite get on board with.
So you've got Emma Stone holding the whole thing together, Dafoe doing solid work, and a movie everyone else seems to be losing their minds over that just didn't land for me. I'm not racing back to watch it again, and I'd only point very specific people toward it. Everyone else, you're not missing what they're telling you you're missing.
only for very specific people
