Bull Durham
By the end, I figured out what I'd actually been watching. The movie sells itself as a baseball comedy, and sure, it is one, but underneath all the minor league hijinks and locker room one-liners, this is a love story. Once that clicked, the whole thing landed harder than I expected it to.
Kevin, Susan, and Tim are all perfectly cast. I don't know how else to put it. Every one of them fits their role like the costume was tailored on day one. The love triangle, or whatever you want to call the weird gravitational pull between the three of them, is the engine of the entire picture. It's messy and funny and a little sad, and I was into all of it.
A love story dressed up in a baseball uniform.
What got me was the ending. Tim's all grown up by the time the credits roll. Kevin rides off into the sunset like the veteran he is. And Susan? She's already getting the guest room ready for the next rookie to come through town. But the kicker is that Kevin and Susan are still pining for each other through all of it. That's the part that stuck with me after I turned the TV off.
The supporting cast is loaded with lines you'll want to repeat. I won't quote them here because half the fun is hearing them fresh, but there are a handful of moments where some role player on the team gets a line off and you just grin. The kind of stuff that makes a movie feel lived in.
I came into this one not expecting much and walked away thinking about it for a while, which is about the highest compliment I can pay a movie I caught on TV by myself. Would I throw it on again? Absolutely. Would I tell everyone I know to watch it? Not really. This isn't a "drop everything" recommendation. It's a "if you're the right kind of person, you're going to love this" recommendation. You know who you are.
A love story dressed up in a baseball uniform. Took me the whole runtime to see it, and I'm glad I did.
