The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

This isn't a movie. It's an experience. I'll say it without flinching: perfect movie.

Peter Jackson stuck the landing on the trilogy in a way that almost no franchise ever pulls off. This is cinema operating at the absolute top of what cinema can do. I saw it in a theater, with friends, and the room felt electric. Every choice lands. Every moment earns the one before it and sets up the one after.

I'll say it without flinching: perfect movie.

Elijah Wood's presence carries this thing. He doesn't have to say much; you feel it. And the bond between him and Sean Astin is the beating heart of the whole picture. That friendship is what the story is actually about, and both guys deliver it without ever winking at the camera.

Then you've got Ian McKellen, who can command a scene just by standing in it. The guy walks into a frame and the frame belongs to him. And Viggo Mortensen has this magnetic energy that pulls the whole epic forward whenever he's on screen. You believe him. You'd follow him.

What didn't work? Nothing. I sat there searching for a nit to pick and came up empty. That basically never happens.

This movie changes lives. I know how that sounds. I don't care. Some films you watch and forget by the next morning. This one stays. It stayed with me then, it stays with me now, and I'll be carrying it around for the rest of my life. Recommend it to everyone. Period.
