We Have a Ghost

Billed as a horror comedy, sold to me as something to put on in the background. What I got instead was a sweet ode to family that I couldn't look away from.

I loved this thing. Full stop.

I went in expecting jump scares and goofs.

Jahi Di'Allo Winston was new to me, and he's the real deal. The chemistry between him and David Harbour does all the heavy lifting, and it works because you actually believe Kevin cares about Ernest. That's not a small thing. A lot of movies try to sell you on an unlikely friendship and you can see the strings. Not here. The bond feels lived-in.

Tig Notaro shows up and does Tig Notaro things, which is to say she's great, because she's always great. At this point that's just a law of physics.

And then there's the twist at the end. I'm not going to spoil it, but it troubled me in the best way. The kind of turn that makes you sit with the movie for a minute after the credits roll instead of immediately reaching for the remote.

I went in expecting jump scares and goofs. I came out thinking about family. That's a hell of a swap, and I'm here for it.

Would I watch it again? Yeah. Would I recommend it? To anybody who'll listen. It stuck with me, and those are the ones worth talking about.
