Field of Dreams

Top five all time. That's where this one lives for me, and not just among baseball movies. Among everything.

What hooks me is that it's a mystery first. You've got this voice, you've got these instructions, and the movie just keeps peeling the layers back. You're solving it right alongside Ray. That's not what I expected from a movie about a guy building a baseball field in his corn.

You sit down for a baseball movie and you stand up wiping your eyes.

The Shoeless Joe Jackson, which Ray Liota plays brilliantly, thread is the soul of the thing for me. Here's a guy from the Black Sox scandal, a guy who depending on who you ask may not have done a damn thing wrong, and the movie hands him a second chance. A redemption arc for a player who got buried by history. That hits.

Costner is exactly what this role needs. Stoic, steady, not flashy. If you put a bigger personality in that part, the movie tips over. He plays it straight and lets everything around him do the lifting, and it works perfectly. Ray Kinsella is one of his best.

And then there's James Earl Jones. Magical is the word. The voice obviously, because come on, but the acting too. Every scene he's in gets bigger just because he's in it.

The ending. I've seen this movie I don't know how many times and that ending gets me every single time. Every time. It's the kind of ending you don't see coming the first go-round, and once you know it's there, it somehow hits even harder on the rewatches. Perfect is a word I don't throw around, but it's a perfect ending.

That's the trick of this whole movie, really. It sneaks up on you. You sit down for a baseball movie and you stand up wiping your eyes. You think you're getting a sports story and you get something about fathers and second chances and the things we never said. It earns all of it without ever begging for it.

If you haven't seen Field of Dreams, fix that. If you have seen it and it didn't land, watch it again, because I think you missed something. This is one of the great ones. Not great baseball movies. Great movies, period.
